The New York State Bar provides professional and education development resources such as Trial Academy, a unique boot camp to equip new attorneys in courtroom performance and effectiveness. The bar launched Trial Academy in 2009. The five-day program allows attorneys to examine every stage of a courtroom trial, beginning with jury selection and continuing through closing arguments. Additional points of emphasis include witness preparation, cross-examinations, and body language when speaking with a jury. Young lawyers can explore these and other subjects under the tutelage of top civil and criminal attorneys.
New York State Bar Association president Richard Lewis said Trial Academy epitomizes the bar’s focus on hands-on, real-world experience. For many new legal professionals, Trial Academy is the first time they put their courtroom skills to use. The safe environment allows attorneys to learn from their mistakes and gain confidence before their first trial.
